THE CONTEXT

We, representatives from NGOs in India, gathered here at the National Consultation on Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children from 28th & 29th July, 2001 in Kolkata to address key challenges posed by trafficking and sexual abuse of children and to identify/reinforce actions against this phenomenon. The consultation was organised by ATSEC - Action Against Trafficking & Sexual Exploitation of Children and funded by UNIFEM. Other agencies that participated in the deliberations were UNICEF , SCF, CRY, TdH and about 104 NGOs from 17 States of India.

OUR COMMITMENT

Our commitment to combat trafficking and sexual abuse of children is based upon our firm belief in Child Rights and the need to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse in the country. The key principles inherent in this Convention namely non-discrimination, the best interest of the child, the child's rights to life, survival and development and respect for the views of the child, are heart of our actions and encompases the need for effective assistance and protection for those under 18 years of age.

We commit ourselves to even more effective action against trafficking and sexual exploitation of children based upon the following measures:
